Elvis and Nixon – First Original Film from Amazon.com

Elvis & Nixon – There can be no exaggerating the colossal weirdness of a summit between Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, and music and pop icon Elvis Presley.

Elvis & Nixon

Review and recap Elvis & Nixon

The two met (in real life) on December 21, 1970. In another three and a half years, Richard Nixon would resign from the presidency. In a little over seven years, Elvis Presley would be found dead at Graceland.

In the first venture into film, Amazon.com delivers an entertaining, if uneven feature film. Michael Shannon is riveting as Elvis Presley, so much so that any scene that Shannon isn’t in seems to drag and distract.

Disgusted with what he was seeing on the news and what he believed to be a growing anti-American sentiment domestically, Elvis shoots out all three of his television screens and promptly heads to Los Angeles to collect his lifelong friend Jerry Schilling (Alex Pettyfer) before heading to Washington D.C.

Elvis, who was delighted by receiving honorary badges from various and sundry law enforcement organizations, was cooking up a plan to become a “federal agent at large” – seeking to get buy in from the DEA, Hoover and/or Nixon.

Elvis & Nixon

Nixon does all he can to avoid a meeting with Elvis. However, his 22-year-old daughter Julie, a big fan of The King, influences her father. Tricia’s tastes, we’re told, ran more towards the Beach Boys.
