The American Season 5 Episode 3 The Midges
The first scene in The Americans, Season 5, Episode 3, “The Midges” takes place in a bowling alley with Alexi expounding on his favorite subject, how horrible the Soviet Union is. Later, Elizabeth agrees with Tuan that the Russian defector really needs to get shot. Neither were in on the conversation that Alexi had with Philip in which he describes how his father died in a labor camp under Stalin.
Philip and Elizabeth make the momentous decision to read Paige in on their latest mission, which is to uncover what they think is an American plot to destroy the Soviet grain supply. Gabriel has already confirmed that the insects Elizabeth found in the Illinois greenhouse were midges, designed to eat grain plants. The theory is that the former anti-nuclear protestor teenager would have something else to think about than to lose her virginity to Matthew. The revelation only leads to Paige getting more scared and confused, something Matthew picks up on.
Elizabeth and Philip make a road trip to Oklahoma to follow up on the insect conspiracy theory. While there, Philip, who suffered hunger when he was a child, lamented that the Soviet Union, with as much arable land as America, cannot feed itself. How can that be? Instead of answering him, Elizabeth distracts her husband with sex.
Later they sneak into a research lab and encounter a tech named Randy who picked the wrong night to come in to work. After pumping him for information, Philip breaks Randy’s neck and stuffs his body into the trunk. He asks Elizabeth with some irony, “Should we tell Paige about this?”
Meanwhile, back in Moscow, Oleg pays a call to the manager of a Soviet market with threadbare shelves and a habit of petty corruption. The attempted bribe with tangerines is more pathetic than anything else.
As Oleg leaves, who do we see but Martha, who had the misfortune of being Philip’s bigamist wife and asset inside FBI headquarters, now in a headscarf and wearing the expression of Russian suffering while she contemplates the poor choices at the market. When Oleg returns home, he finally takes the time to play the tape the CIA agent handed him and discovers how much trouble he is in.
In Yugoslavia, Mischa discovers that the man who was going to smuggle him into Austria has been arrested and that the man who replaced him does not seem to be the sort to do that kind of business with.
Finally, Stan and his partner have started stalking an official for Aeroflot, the Soviet state airline. So far the poor man has run away. What this will lead to cannot be said at the current time.
