The Americans Immersion S5E8

In The Americans, Season 5, Episode 8, “Immersion,” one of Philip’s and Elizabeth’s operations dials back a bit while another heats up. The grain investigation is on the back burner while Moscow evaluates the sample that Gabriel brought back with him. In the meantime, because Alexei’s wife Evgheniya has gotten a job teaching Russian to CIA agents, which makes her an unwitting source for the two deep-cover KGB agents. Claudia, who has reassumed her duties as their handler, is taking control of the two spies.

The grain operation runs into a complication when Philip’s source inside the agricultural research firm, Deidre, decides to break things off with him. This development would be quite unacceptable to Moscow Center. Fortunately, Philip can reconnect with his honey source by confessing that he is married, which explains some of the behavior that has troubled Deidre.

Philip and Elizabeth set out to identify all of the CIA agents Evgheniya is teaching. They hit on an unexpected gold mine when they discover she is having an affair with one of them. The man is in line to be deputy chief of the CIA’s Moscow station. So the plan is to manipulate her into moving back to Russia by making sure her son is made even more miserable at school.

Back in Moscow, Oleg has his room searched by agents of the KGB’s counterintelligence directorate. What are they looking for? Do they know of that contact that was made by the CIA and of the indiscretion he committed while in America?

Stan and his partner work their contact who works at the Soviet news agency TASS, the single mother named Sofia. She is very nervous but very keen to make a new life for her son in America. The FBI will pay her $500 a month, perhaps more later, with half going to a college fund. Sofia can give them some insight about a GRU agent attached to her group who is extremely unpopular. She also persuades the agents to arrange to get her teeth fixed.

Paige is still miserable and afraid due to her breakup with Matthew and having KGB agents as parents. Elizabeth decides to bond with her by telling her daughter that she was raped when she was 18. Her training and her work have given her the self-confidence she needed to get through that. Paige can certainly do the same, though she is still a bit dubious. Her self-defense training is still going well, though.

Finally, Henry, the much neglected and highly intelligent other child of Philip and Elizabeth, has a crush on a girl. One wonders whether this will develop into something.
