The World Council of Churches The Americans Season 5 Episode 12

In The Americans, Season 5, Episode 12, “The World Council of Churches” Pastor Tim tells Paige that he has decided to take a job in Buenos Aires. Paige knows, as Tim can never know, that the new position was arranged by her parents with the help of the Soviet Union and its allies in the religious organizations in the West. Paige marvels at the extent of Soviet influence and makes a big show of taking off her crucifix. Elizabeth gives it back to her, reminding her that the good pastor is not in Argentina yet and thus the charade has to be maintained.

Meanwhile, Philip and Elizabeth have a problem. If they are going back home, what about the children? Claudia, their control, advises them not to tell Henry, who is oblivious to what his parents really are up to until it is too late. Later, when Henry and his girlfriend cook Philip and Elizabeth dinner as a thank you gesture for being understanding about the boarding school, we see what the lad stands to lose if he suddenly finds himself in the USSR. They even ask Pastor Tim for advice. What he has to tell them about not denying them challenges is not very useful, but somewhat measured considering that the two KGB spies could kill him and his family if they think he has become a threat. Paige sets up an improvised punching bag in the garage and begins punching and kicking the hell out of it, suggesting that she is about more than practicing self-defense.

Back in the Soviet Union, the KGB is asking Oleg some awkward questions about his relationship with a female colleague and with Stan. Did he blow the operation that caused William, the man the Soviets had inside an American biowar lab, to fall into the hands of the FBI? If so, Oleg is in danger of being shot.

Oleg has other problems concerning the investigation of the food distribution bribery ring. At first, he argues to his superiors that they should go easy on the secretary who had given them so much information. The KGB is inclined to give her hard time. Later, Oleg’s boss informs him that higher ups have told them to back off. No one is going to be arrested. He has a rueful conversation with his father, a state minister, about how truly rotten the Soviet system has become.

Stan and his partner find that their asset has a new fiancé whom she has read in to the arrangement she made with the FBI. Has she been blown and is now being run by her superiors against them? Their boss tells them to wait and see but to continue the operation.

Finally, the Morozov operation goes off the rails. Despite the fact that Pasha comes home with a black eye and is being beaten up at school, his father is quite firm about not going back to the Soviet Union. Elizabeth tells Tuan that they have to rethink their approach.

Unfortunately, Tuan decides to go rogue. He tells Pasha to make a big show of slitting his wrists, though in such a way as he will not bleed out before his parents find him. This gambit is a little too raw even for hardened KGB killers like Philip and Elizabeth. Not being able to get anyone at the Morozov house on the phone, they leave to hurry there before a tragedy happens. But who is that man in the parked car in an obvious stakeout position?
