Outlander, Season 3, Episode 2, “Surrender”

Outlander, Season 3, Episode 2, “Surrender” takes place in both the 18th century, where Jamie Fraser is still a hunted fugitive six years after the Battle of Culloden and in the 20th century where Claire is living the life of a discontented housewife a year after arriving back to her present after years of high adventure in Scotland and France of two centuries before. Neither person, separated from one another by time and space, are particularly happy.
Outlander Surrender Recap Season 3 Episode 2

Jamie is living in a cave, occasionally sneaking out to the woods to kill a deer for food, and visiting his relatives at Lallybrach for a bath, a shave, and the latest gossip. This practice is becoming increasingly dangerous as the Redcoat patrols are very keen to catch Jamie, showing up at the family estate to make threats and offer reward money.

Things start to come to a head when Fergus, the French orphan who was adopted into the Fraser clan, runs into a group of Redcoats. The English, and one pro-government Scot, make their usual pitch that the lad had better give Jamie up or else. Fergus gives them some back talk so, to teach a lesson, the English soldiers lop off one of his hands and leave him to bleed out. Fortunately, Jamie is lurking nearby. He binds up Fergus’ wound and takes him to Lallybrach to be nursed back to health.

The incident causes Jamie to make a decision. Rather than continue to endanger his family, Jamie arranges for his sister to give him up to the English. His family gets the reward money, which will be useful to keep body and soul together, and Jamie will be taken to prison since the executions that took place in the wake of Culloden seem to have died down.

Outlander Surrender Recap Season 3 Episode 2

Meanwhile. In 1949, Claire is delighting in her daughter, a squirmy young lady who cries and rolls around. She is also trying to be a dutiful wife to Frank, even bringing back intimacy to their marriage. However, Frank observes that she always has her eyes closed when they make love. Clearly, while he is with Claire, she is imagining herself with that other fellow from the 18th century.

Two things develop from this realization. Claire decides to enter medical school to become a doctor. She is the only woman in her class (along with the only African American) much to the disdain of her anatomy teacher. The other thing that happens is that Claire and Frank stop even pretending and start sleeping in separate twin beds. Theirs is a marriage now in name only.
